Finding Your Cacao Dose: A Simple Guide for Morning, Afternoon & Evening

Ceremonial cacao isn't a one-size-fits-all ritual. The right amount for you depends on your sensitivity, your intention for the day, and honestly, how your body is feeling in that moment. Once you get a feel for it, dosing becomes less like a measurement and more like a conversation — a little less some days, a little more on others.

Here's a simple way to think about it, plus a few recipes to match the rhythm of your day.

How Much Cacao Should You Use?

A helpful starting framework:

  • Light / Daily dose (10–15g): Great for beginners, or anyone sensitive to caffeine and stimulants. This is a gentle, everyday amount — enough to feel grounded and clear without much of a stimulating edge.
  • Standard dose (20–25g): The sweet spot for most people using cacao as a daily ritual — as a coffee alternative, before creative work, or heading into a meditation practice.
  • Deeper / Ceremonial dose (30–40g+): Reserved for more intentional sittings — group ceremony, extended meditation, or moments where you want a fuller, more expansive experience. We'd suggest working up to this rather than starting here.

A good rule of thumb: start low, pay attention to how you feel over the next hour, and adjust from there. Everyone's relationship with cacao is a little different.

Our cacao is grown and processed with care in the Talamanca Mountains, using traditional methods rooted in generations of local knowledge — so what you're working with is close to the plant in its purest form, not a processed cocoa powder. That matters for dosing, since minimally processed cacao tends to be more potent than what you'll find in a grocery store.

Morning: Wake Up Without the Crash

10–20g cacao, blended with:

  • 6–8oz hot water or plant milk (oat or cashew work beautifully)
  • A small drizzle of honey or maple syrup
  • A pinch of cinnamon

Blend or froth until smooth. This is a lovely replacement for coffee if you're looking for sustained energy without the jitters — theobromine (cacao's natural stimulant) tends to release more gradually than caffeine.

Afternoon: A Grounded Reset

10–15g cacao, blended with:

  • ¾ cup warm herbal tea (tulsi, rooibos, or peppermint all pair nicely)
  • A splash of plant milk
  • Optional: a pinch of cayenne or maca for extra lift

Keep this one a little lighter than your morning cup. It's meant to clear the afternoon fog and support focus — not send you into overdrive before dinner.

Evening: A Gentle Wind-Down

5–10g cacao, blended with:

  • ½ cup warm plant milk
  • A touch of nutmeg or cardamom
  • No sweetener needed, or just a hint

Keep it minimal here. Cacao can be stimulating for some people, so a smaller evening dose helps you enjoy the ritual without disrupting sleep. If you're especially sensitive to theobromine, it's worth experimenting with drinking your last cup earlier in the day instead.

Listen to Your Body

Dosing cacao is less about hitting an exact number and more about tuning in. Some days you'll want a smaller cup to ease into the morning; other days you'll crave a fuller dose to sit with in ceremony. Give yourself permission to experiment — that's really what this whole practice is about.
